Labor Day Weekend: One More Long Weekend
There’s something about Labor Day weekend that feels different.
It’s not quite the end of summer—not officially, anyway—but here on Long Island, it feels like the weekend when we collectively realize that the season we wait all year for has gone way too fast.
The beach bags are still packed. The coolers are still getting filled. The boats are still in the water. The grills are fired up, the kids are running around barefoot, and nobody is quite ready to admit that school schedules, hockey rinks, fall sports, and packed calendars are waiting right around the corner.
So this weekend? We’re holding onto summer a little longer.
The Last Big Weekend of Summer
Labor Day weekend has always been one of those weekends meant for doing whatever makes summer feel like summer to you.
Maybe that means an early morning trip to the beach before the crowds arrive. Maybe it’s spending the afternoon on the boat, squeezing in one more pool day, heading out east, gathering everyone in the backyard, or loading up the car for one final summer adventure.
There doesn’t have to be a huge plan.
Sometimes the best weekends are the ones filled with simple things: salty hair, sandy feet, something cooking on the grill, music playing outside, kids staying up later than they should, and everyone lingering just a little longer because nobody wants the night to end.
Long Island Does Labor Day Right
Living on Long Island means we’re lucky enough to have endless ways to spend a summer weekend.
You can start the morning with coffee—or tea—and a drive east, spend the afternoon along the water, grab dinner somewhere with outdoor seating, catch live music, watch the sunset, or simply stay home and make your own backyard feel like the destination.
And while Labor Day may traditionally mark the unofficial end of summer, Long Islanders know a little secret:
September can be one of the best months here.
The beaches get quieter. The weather is still warm. The sunsets somehow seem even better. And there are still plenty of weekends left for boating, beach days, camping, bonfires, baseball fields, hockey tournaments, and whatever else makes your family’s weekends yours.
From Summer Weekends to Fall Weekends
That’s the thing about being a Weekend Warrior.
The season changes, but the weekends don’t stop.
Soon, coolers and beach chairs will share trunk space with hockey bags. Flip-flops will get traded for sneakers and boots. Beach nights turn into firepit nights. Summer tournaments become fall seasons. And before we know it, we’ll be reaching for hoodies on Saturday mornings.
We’re not saying goodbye to summer.
We’re just getting ready for the next kind of weekend.
Your Labor Day Weekend Checklist
However you spend it, make this one count.
- Get outside
- Eat something off the grill
- Spend time near the water if you can
- Watch at least one sunset
- Put the phone down for a little while
- Stay up too late
- Take the picture
- Make one more summer memory
- Wear your Weekend Warrior gear, obviously
- Start getting excited for everything fall has coming
Summer may be winding down, but around here, the best part of the year is never just one season.
It’s the Saturdays at the rink. The Sundays at the beach. The road trips, tournaments, tailgates, campgrounds, backyard nights, family traditions, and spontaneous plans that somehow become your favorite memories.
So here’s to one more long summer weekend.
One more beach day.
One more late night.
One more excuse to forget what day it is.
And whatever comes next.
Here’s to the weekends well lived.
